According to a report from DigiTimes, Intel's Skylake-X series might be released in Q3 2017 during Gamescom 2017 in Cologne. These new CPUs will require you to buy a new motherboard since they will use a new socket - LGA 2066. The platform is called Basin Falls and also includes new CPUs.

The upcoming palette of CPUs looks quite interesting. It appears that Intel decided to open their high-end desktop platform up to Kaby Lake processors as well. Initially it was expected that only Skylake-X processors are going to be compatible with the HEDT X299 platform, but now we know that there is also a Kaby Lake-X CPU, which is basically a Kaby Lake CPU without integrated graphics, a quad channel memory interface strapped to it and a 2066 pin package. Compared to the already available Kaby Lake-S processors the “X” verison will also come with a higher TDP of 112 Watt. A quick look at the further specifications of Kaby Lake-X shows that it will feature 16 PCIe Gen 3.0 lanes and a maximum of 4 cores.


Looking at the Skylake-X specifications these CPUs will come with six, eight or ten cores, either 28 or 44 PCIe Gen 3.0 lanes and 140W TDP.


Although it is not clear yet what features the new X299 chipset will be equipped with, we believe there will be ten integrated USB 3.0 ports, eight SATA-III ports and an Intel LAN controller. It's still not confirmed if we will find native USB 3.1 ports. The upcoming Intel Skylake-X series processors are going to cost between 450 and 1800 dollars, which is the same price bracket the current Intel Broadwell-E series CPUs are in.
