Intel announces new DC P3100 SSD series

M.2 NVMe SSD for data centers

Intel has announced its newest M.2 NVMe SSD series meant for data centers, the DC P3100 SSD series.

Coming in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities, the Intel DC P3100 is actually the only single-sided M.2 form-factor with PCIe 3.0 x4 interface and NVMe protocol meant for data centers.

While it is not usual that data centers use M.2 form-factor, these offer certain benefits, including low power consumption of 10mW idle and 5.5W active power draw as well as obvious benefits from the actual physical size of the 2280 M.2 form-factor with height set at 1.5mm.

Specification wise, the new Intel DC P3100 SSD series is similar to the Intel 600p series consumer version, as it is based on 3D TLC NAND. Unlike the Intel 600p series, the DC P3100 SSD series offer slightly lower performance, but that can be attributed to a different test methodology for data center SSDs.

According to Intel, the new DC P3100 offers sequential read and write performance of up to 1,800MB/s and 175MB/s with random 4K performance peaking at 114K IOPS for read and 10K IOPS for write. It has a MTBF of 1.6 million hours and endurance rating of up to 580TBW for the 1TB version.

Since it is an enterprise class SSD for data centers, Intel's DC P3100 series will come with power-loss protection and AES-256 encryption.

Intel did not reveal any details regarding the price but did say that these will be available for data center and enterprise customers soon.
