As you already know, Sony has unveiled its new Playstation 4 Pro console that will, as expected, be based on AMD hardware and packs a shiny new Polaris GPU, but some games won't be using that additional performance.
Based on a custom APU with the same eight-core Jaguar CPU part as the original PS4, just with a slight clock increase to 2.1GHz, the new PS4 Pro also comes with an upgraded GPU, which doubles the performance.
According to known details, the new GPU is based on 14nm Polaris chip and packs 36 Compute Units, which is enough for 4.2 TFLOPs of performance. This is more than double the performance compared to the original 28nm GPU with 18 Compute Units and 1.84 TFLOPs of performance. The new GPU will still be connected to 8GB of GDDR5 memory but offer slightly higher 218Gbps of memory bandwidth.
This gives the Playstation 4 Pro the performance of a RX 470, which peaks at 4.9 TFLOPs.
Unfortunately, this doesn't mean that all games, especially the ones that have been already released, will be able to use additional GPU performance, as it will solely depend on the developer.
While Sony's new US $399-priced Playstation 4 Pro will bring 4K-gaming and better VR experience, it lacks 4K Blu-ray player as Sony puts a lot of focus on streaming such content rather than play it directly from the Blu-ray discs.
Besides the Playstation 4 Pro, which will be available on November 10th with a price set at US $399/€399, Sony is about to release the Playstation 4 Slim, a slimmer version of the original Playstation 4, which will be available on September 15th for US $299/€299.
