There have been plenty of reports that RX 480 is a decent overclocker and that AMD AIB partners will be able to push their custom versions to anywhere between 1480MHz and 1600MHz, but now we have some scores showing it hit 1500MHz and offering performance higher than the Radeon R9 Nano.
According to a report from Wccftech.com, which includes a couple of overclocking results with the RX 480, the reference design RX 480 is still somewhat limited by its power limitations but still some users managed to get a decent overclocking result by using an aftermarket air cooler.
The first on the list is
an overclocking result from oc.jagatreview.com and Alva "Lucky_n00b" Jonathan, who managed to push its RX 480 to 1425MHz which got him a graphics score of 14646 in 3DMark Fire Strike benchmark. This results pushed his RX 480 ahead of a factory-overclocked R9 390X and the stock R9 Nano.
Caseking and der8auer had a bit more luck with their own card but also used liquid cooling with an universal block and managed to get a stable GPU clock of 1500MHz, getting a graphics score of 15363 in 3DMark, which is not only faster than R9 Nano but also quite close to R9 Fury.
Custom AMD RX 480 coming from AMD AIB partners will provide more overclocking headroom so we will probably see even higher overclocking results in future but it appears that reference design is not bad either as long as you can keep the temperatures in check.
