AMD to resolve RX 480 power issue with driver update

Needs more fine tuning

AMD has now officially responded to the issue that plagues its recently launched Radeon RX 480 where the card is drawing too much power from a PCIe slot and the issue should be fixed with next driver update.

The issue is allegedly limited to certain motherboards which could not handle sustained operation under high load, mostly when the RX 480 is overclocked, and seems to affect only some graphics cards, AMD has been looking into it and should fix it soon.

According to AMD, they have managed to identify certain scenarios where the tuning of some RX 480 boards was not optimal and since these can be adjusted via software, AMD is working on a driver that should resolve this issue.

As you know, we continuously tune our GPUs in order to maximize their performance within their given power envelopes and the speed of the memory interface, which in this case is an unprecedented 8Gbps for GDDR5. Recently, we identified select scenarios where the tuning of some RX 480 boards was not optimal. Fortunately, we can adjust the GPU's tuning via software in order to resolve this issue. We are already testing a driver that implements a fix, and we will provide an update to the community on our progress on Tuesday (July 5, 2016).

AMD managed to sell quite a few Radeon RX 480 and if the issue was serious we would have seen plenty of user reports but apparently this is not a big deal. To be safe, you should not push your RX 480 beyond the reference clocks, at least not until the issue has been sorted.

The issue should be fixed on upcoming custom RX 480 from AMD AIB partners as these will mostly come with an 8-pin PCIe power connector rather than the 6-pin one.

We will keep an eye on AMD's driver support page for this new hotfix driver.
