Gigabyte unveils X170-Extreme ECC motherboard

Based on C236 chipset

Gigabyte has unveiled yet another motherboard based on Intel's C236 chipset, bringing support for both Intel's Xeon E3-1200 V5 CPUs as well as support for DDR4 ECC memory.

Based on a standard ATX form-factor, the new Gigabyte X170-Extreme ECC motherboard follows the military theme, with black PCB, white slots and white camo graphics on heatsink. Despite mostly focused on Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 line of CPUs, the Gigabyte X170-Extreme ECC motherboard also supports all Intel 6th generation Core Skylake CPUs.

It comes with two PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots (working at x8/x8), a single PCI-Express 3.0 x16 (working at x4) and three PCI-Express 3.0 x1 slots. When it comes to storage, the new motherboard features two 32Gbps M.2 slots and four SATA-Express 16Gbps ports, which also means it has eight SATA 6Gbps ports.

Gigabyte managed to include a couple of high-end features on the new X170-Extreme ECC motherboard like the dual Gigabit Ethernet, one from Intel I219-V controller and other from Killer E2400 chip, Gigabyte's Creative SoundCore 3D audio with TI Burr Brown OPA2134 OP-AMP, Nichicon Muse electrolytic capacitors and ground-layer isolation and dual-UEFI BIOS.

It also comes with plenty of USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports but also an Intel-based 2-port USB 3.1 (Type-A and Type-C) controller which connects to the PCH via PCI-Express 3.0 x4 interface, offering 10Gbps over both ports. It also comes with 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 port with DisplayPort 1.2 pass-through.

Unfortunately, Gigabyte did not reveal any details regarding the price or the availability date but we will definitely keep a closer eye on it and wait for it to hit retail/e-tail.
