AMD might unveil external GPU enclosure at GDC 2016

External GPU over Thunderbolt 3

According to a new report and a post by Robert Hallock, AMD will push for external GPUs and maybe even unveil a reference external GPU solution at GDC 2016.

We have already seen plenty of external GPU enclosures during CES 2016 show earlier in January, which included Razer's Core, MSI's Gaming Dock and Alienware's Graphics Amplifier, all made to give additional GPU power to notebooks over Thunderbolt 3.

Now a few months later, it appears that AMD plans to push external GPUs a bit harder and might unveil a bit more information about it soon, most likely at GDC 2016, which is scheduled to kick off on March 14.

In a post on Facebook, Head of Global Technical Marketing at AMD, showed a picture of Razar's Core external GPU enclosure with AMD Radeon graphics card. In the same post, Hallock added that the company thinks there is a big market for such a device, with plenty of users looking to use a single device that does it all, especially if they can turn an ultrathin notebook into a gaming device.

There were quite a few attempts to create an external GPU solution before but with big issues like standardized connectors, cables and OS support, it was quite a hard feat, now that we have Thunderbolt 3, things might change a bit.

In case you missed it, the Thunderbolt 3 interface, described as "the USB-C that does it all", is developed by Intel, doubles the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 2, reaching 40Gbps (5GB/s) and can simultaneously drive two external 4K displays at 60Hz. It supports PCIe 3.0 and other protocols, including HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2.

Hallock promised that we will hear more about it quite soon and with GDC 2016 just around the corner, we just might see that promised fulfilled.
