Valve has released a free benchmark on Steam that tests the performance of your system and check if it can handle SteamVR and virtual reality, the SteamVR Performance Test benchmark.
The benchmark uses a two-minute sequence from Valve's Aperture Robot Repair VR demo and checks if the system is capable of running VR at 90 FPS and if VR content "can tune the visual fidelity up to the recommended level."
The test also checks for bottlenecks and provides information on which piece of hardware, graphics card, CPU or both, need to be upgraded in order to reach recommended performance level.
The system requirements are close to those needed for upcoming Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR headsets and include Windows 7 OS or newer, Intel's Core i5-4590 or AMD FX-8350 or better, 4GB of RAM and Nvidia GTX 970 or AMD R9 290 or better graphics card.
As noted, the SteamVR Performance Test benchmark is free and available at Steam.
