The Khronos Group has finally finished their Vulkan API. Vulkan is a direct competitor to DirectX 12 and meanwhile AMD as well as NVIDIA already offer new beta drivers for download, which support the new standard.
The fact that Vulkan has now finally been launched allows gamers to experience the new API, which is similar to the Mantle API. In the case of AMD as well as NVIDIA there are drivers available for Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 as well as Linux and there is even a non-public Android version.
AMD is mentioning that like DirectX 12, Vulkan is reducing driver overhead significantly. Furthermore unused resources can be allocated as well such as asynchronous shaders. In the case of NVIDIA there is a full documentation to give detailed insight.
