While most reviews sites focus on high-end and mid-range CPUs, the newest performance comparison between Intel's budget dual-core Skylake Core i3-6100 CPU and recently launched AMD six-core Piledriver FX-6330 is quite interesting.

In case you missed it earlier, the AMD FX-6300 was rather silently launched back in December last year and this is a six-core CPU made on 32nm manufacturing process and Piledriver CPU architecture. The CPU is clocked at 3.6GHz base and 4.2GHz Boost clocks, packs 6MB of L2 and 8MB of L3 cache and has a 95W TDP. It works on AMD's current AM3+ platform, supports DDR3-1866 memory and comes bundled with AMD's latest Wraith cooler.

The Intel Core i3-6100 CPU has been on the market a bit longer and this dual-core CPU is based on 14nm manufacturing process with Skylake CPU architecture. It supports Intel Hyper-Threading, works at 3.7GHz base clock and lacks Turbo, has 3MB of L3 cache and TDP of 51W.

PCOnline decided to put these two CPUs against each other in a couple of tests and it is an obvious choice since their price is pretty much the same, at around US $120.

When it comes to CPU bound benchmarks, AMD's six-core FX-6330 certainly wins in multi-threaded applications but Intel's Core i3-6100 is still faster in games, but only slightly. It is important to note that both CPUs managed to pull over 30FPS in games like Crysis 3 and Metro 2033 at 1080p resolution, of course, with a dedicated graphics card.

Both pretty much have the same power consumption in idle. Unfortunately for AMD, the FX-6330 draws 151W under full load while Intel's Core i3-6100 pulls significantly lower 105W.

It appears that Intel's Core i3-6100 is still a better option and it is obvious that AMD is left behind. Intel also offers a better choice when it comes to motherboard lineup, offering more modern connectivity, at least until AMD manage to convince partners to come up with a new set of socket AM3+ motherboards.
