Seagate shows 10TB helium-based enterprise HDD

Seven platters and 7200rpm

Following HGST, Seagate has now announced its first helium-filled hard disk drive aimed for cloud datacenters, the Seagate Enterprise Capacity 3.5-inch HDD.

Although HGST has been shipping helium-filled HDDs for quite a while, it looks like that Seagate wants a piece of that market by introducing a 10TB 3.5-inch Seagate Enterprise Capacity HDD.

Featuring seven perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) platters with 1.43 TB capacity each and 14 heads, it is most likely that Seagate's new Enterprise Capacity HDD runs at 7200rpm. As this is an enterprise-class drive, it will be available with SATA 6Gbps and SAS-12Gbps interface.

Seagate also claims that it managed to get 2.5 million hours MTBP for its helium-filled HDD which is significantly higher compared to other enterprise-class drives. It also features Seagate's PowerChoice and PowerBalance technologies which should manage power consumption during idle as well as help operators to balance power consumption and IOPS performance.

According to Seagate, some of its major customers are already evaluating the new HDD while volume shipments are expected later this year.
