While AMD had quite a lot of various sockets for APUs and CPUs but that should change with the launch of AM4 platform, which will support both the upcoming Summit Ridge CPUs and Bristol Ridge APUs.
While AMD's current Vishera CPUs work only on the AM3+ socket motherboards, Kaveri and Godavari APUs require FM2+ socket motherboard and some Kabini-based chips work only on AM1 platform, AMD will unify its future CPU and APU lineup under a single socket, the upcoming AMD AM4.
According to a slide provided by PC World, during an interview with AMD's James Prior, both the upcoming Summit Ridge, which is a mainstream desktop offer based on the new Zen CPU architecture, as well as the Bristol Ridge, which is AMD's upcoming APU lineup based on Excavator CPU architecture, will both use the same AM4 platform and socket.
This is great news as user will have a wide choice of compatibility and better upgrade choice when switching from an APU to a CPU with dedicated graphics. Motherboards based on AM4 platform are expected to launch in Q2 2016.
