Although the AMD flagship dual-GPU Fiji-based graphics card, codename Gemini, was originally scheduled to launch by the end of this year, now it is obvious that won't happen. According to the latest report, AMD has decided to delay it in order to better align with the market as it is waiting for some VR headsets to launch.
AMD originally scheduled the launch for late 2015 as the company expected to see the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive virtual reality (VR) headsets but now that these headsets have been both delayed to early next year, AMD has decided to postpone its dual-GPU Gemini graphics card as well.
Earlier reports already suggested that AMD has decided to delay its dual-GPU graphics card in order not to ruin the sales of the rest of its lineup, but the newest report,
coming from Hardware.fr, suggest that AMD has decided to wait for VR headsets to launch. It was also obvious that AMD targets VR gaming with its dual-GPU Gemini graphics card and it simply does not make sense for AMD to launch the new graphics card as there are practically no gaming VR headsets on the market.
According to the same report, AMD has already shipped working samples of the dual-GPU Fiji-based Gemini graphics card to various partners and the reaction has been very positive. Head of DICE, Johan Andersson was definitely one of the first guys to get the dual-GPU graphics card and we already saw him tease it on his Twitter profile.
AMD will most likely showcase and probably announce the new dual-GPU Fiji Gemini graphics card at CES 2016 which kicks off on January 6th 2016 and we will probably see it launched sometime in March to June timeframe, possibly at GDC 2016 in March or Computex 2016 show in June. At least we now know that AMD is waiting for VR headsets and that the graphics card is ready.
