While Apple still did not officially announce its automotive plans, the rumor regarding it has been around for a while. The recent hiring of Jonathan Cohen, who was the Director of Deep Learning division at Nvidia, certainly confirms that Apple is considering the move to automotive industry, confirming earlier rumors.
While LinkedIn profile of Jonathan Cohen does not give a lot of details, other than he is currently working on "software" for Apple, he was working on automotive technology at his previous position, including DrivePX, which is an autopilot system for cars based on camera.
