In order to bring a better overclocking potential, it appears that ASUS will use a modified LGA1151 socket on its Intel Z170-based motherboards.

According to a report from BenchLife, while the standard LGA1151 features exactly 1151 pins, the custom LGA1151 OC socket will have a higher amount of pins in order to have a higher power delivery and thus better overclocking potential for Intel LGA1151 CPUs, especially the unlocked Core i7-6700K and Core i5-6600K Skylake-S CPUs.

ASUS has already used the OC socket on its Intel X99 chipset-based motherboards in order to get a better overclocking potential on Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition CPUs and we have seen similar sockets from other motherboard manufacturers as well.

According to the report, the first batch of ASUS motherboard featuring such custom OC socket will include ASUS Z170-K, Z170-Deluxe, Z170-AR, Z170-A, Z170 Pro Gaming, as well as ASUS Republic of Gamers lineup, the ROG Maximus VIII Ranger, ROG Maximus VIII Hero and ROG Maximus VIII Gene.

We are certainly looking forward to it as it would be nice to see how much better will the overclocking be with such custom OC socket.
