Last week rumors surfaced, claiming that Kaby Lake and Cannonlake might be delayed. Meanwhile Intel's CEO Brian Krzanich confirmed these also providing a time window when thes CPUs can be expected.
Intel has communicated that Kaby Lake, which is going to be the refresh of Skylake will be release one year after Skylake. Skylake is going to be launched on 5th of August and therefore Kaby Lake can be expected to make it to market in August 2016.
Cannonlake will be the first 10nm processor and acutally the true refresh of Skylake. Indications are that Intel needs more time for the transition to put the 10nm manufacturing process in place. Originally Cannonlake was planned to be released in 2016. Apart from that Intel will be using a traditional approach to manufacture 10nm chips. The switch to EUV systems is going to happen, when the 7nm process will be introduced. Apart from that it looks like Intel is already working on that process as well, since it ordered 15 EUV systems at ASML.
This puts an end to all the rumors which circulated during the last week and Intel is simply making its point that the implementation of new manufacturing processes is going to take longer than expected. Especially manufacturing chips with 7nm process technology will be a big challenge. It might acutally lead to yet another correction of Moore's Law. Originally Moore's Law predicted that the transistor count doubles ever 12 months. This was corrected to an 18 months interval rather quickly until later 24 months were the defacto standard. Meanwhile Brian Krzanich is expecting that doubling the transistor count will take 2.5 years.
