Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro gets AMD graphics

Force Touch and AMD Radeon R9 M370X

Apple has updated its quite popular 15-inch MacBook Pro, giving it the Force Touch touchpad as well as the new AMD Radeon R9 M370X graphics.

Apple's refreshed 15-inch MacBook Pro comes with the same 15.4-inch 2880x1800 resolution display but, unlike the earlier version powered by Nvidia's GTX 750M graphics card, has more graphics power with the AMD Radeon R9 M370X.

While Apple did not reveal any specifications regarding the Radeon R9 M370X, other than it performs "up to 80 percent faster" compared to the GTX 750M, it is most likely that the R9 M370X is based on AMD's 28nm Tonga GCN 2.0 GPU with 640 Stream Processors and up to 2GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 128-bit memory interface.

As noted, the new 15-inch MacBook Pro also got the Force Touch touchpad seen earlier on the 13-inch Macbook Pro and it is still powered by the same Haswell Core i7 mobile CPUs.

Apple also stuck to standard port configuration which should make users quite happy as this one does not have a single USB Type-C port, but did upgrade the battery which should be enough for up to nine hours of web browsing or movie playback, according to Apple.

Apple also updated the storage with PCIe-based SSDs with up to 1TB of capacity, which is according to Apple, up to two times faster than in the older model.

The base SKU starts at US $1,999 and includes a 2.2GHz quad-core Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, 256GB of SSD storage and comes without Radeon R9 M370X graphics card, while the one with R9 M370X, a quad-core Intel Core i7 CPU clocked at 2.5GHz, 16GB of DDR3-1600 memory and a 512GB PCIe SSD starts at US $2,499.

The new Apple 15-inch MacBook Pro can be further configured at Apple's Online Store and should be available soon.
