It appears that drivers are actually behind the launch delay for the GTX Titan Z, according to the latest report. Earlier leaked performance details revealed that the GTX Titan Z is quite close to the US $1,499 priced AMD Radeon R9 295X2 which suggested that Nvidia had to somehow raise performance in order to justify the US $2,999 price tag.


Apparently, Nvidia is not updating hardware specifications but rather currently developing a new driver which should make the GTX Titan Z faster than the Radeon R9 295X2. To be fair, most revealed performance numbers were focused on gaming benchmarks which is not exactly what the GTX Titan Z is made for and it should end up significantly faster than R9 295X2 when it comes to Double Precision compute performance.

According to the same report, Nvidia has told retailers and distributors to hold the sales of the GTX Titan Z inventory until the release of the new driver. Unfortunately, the report did not suggest any specific date but we are sure curious to see how much more performance could Nvidia pull via driver update.
