Amazon announces Fire TV, its own set-top box

More powerful than Apple TV, US-only for now

Apple TV and Roku have just got some impressive competition as Amazon has announced its new video streaming device for any living room, the US $99 priced Amazon Fire TV.

Shipping today, the Amazon Fire TV is quite an impressive little box. Measuring at less than an inch thick (or below 2.54cm), the box packs a still unknown quad-core SoC, 2GB of RAM, 802.11bgn WiFi and 8GB of internal storage.

It can stream any full HD content to your TV via HDMI output and includes a rather neat looking remote control which allows voice commands. In order to showcase and prove the performance merits of its new streaming box, Amazon is pushing hard for gaming as well and has actually designed a dedicated gamepad for the set-top box called the Fire TV gamepad which will retail at US $39.99 and include 1000 Amazon coins which can be used to buy games. According to Amazon, the cost of games will average at between one and two dollars and Amazon will be developing some of those games as well.

To show that the Fire TV will not be the close environment limited to Amazon content and its Amazon Prime, Amazon has announced integration of Netflix, Hulu Plus, Youtube, ESPN content, Showtime and much more.

Currently available only in the States for US $99 and shipping today on April 2nd, Amazon has noted that this one will first be only available in the USA while global launch is still considered.
