Microsoft joins the virtual reality race

Spends US $150 million on virtual reality tech

The virtual reality race is heating up and recent Facebook's purchase of Oculus Rift and the announcement from Sony have stirred up things, as according to the report over at Pocket-lint.com, Microsoft has reportedly spent US $150 million to buy virtual reality tech from smart glasses specialist Osterhourt Design Group.

Although the focus of the company was on augmented reality and creating glasses which are capable of displaying screens within them, there is enough meat on that bone for Microsoft to create some glasses which can be paired up with their own Xbox One console.

Current Osterhout project, the X6 glasses, feature dual-HD see-through displays with 3D capability, infrared vision and laser rangefinder, although it is highly unlikely that these features will be in Microsoft's version.

Microsoft will hold its yearly Build conference later today and while these patents were bought back in January, it is believed that we will at least hear something regarding Microsoft's push into VR or AR.
