AMD has announced its full support for Microsoft and its newest API, the DirectX 12, which promises new, "console-like" version of the graphics API. The new DirectX 12 API will be supported on all AMD Radeon GPUs based on the Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture.
According to AMD's corporate vice president and general manager for Graphics Business Unit, Matt Skynner, AMD strongly believes in the benefits that both gamers and game developers can get from a lower-overhead API development. With the Mantle API, AMD already shown its commitment to incredible performance and looks forward to getting the same performance gains by supporting the DirectX 12, Skynner noted.
Offering new opportunities for game developers which will be able to pull more performance from PC GPUs, thanks to a lower API overhead, the DirectX 12 will be the first generational leap for the platform since the introduction of DirectX 11 back in 2008, according to AMD.
"AMD has always been an essential partner in the development of DirectX," said Anuj Gosalia, Development Manager, Windows Graphics, Microsoft. "As we start the next chapter for our historic API, we look forward to continued great collaboration with AMD to bring gamers the best possible performance on AMD hardware."
AMD has also announced that the DirectX 12 support schedule for AMD Radeon GPUs will be announced at a later date.
