Leaving of John Carmack, a legendary game developer from iD Software and the guy behind some classic shooters like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake, was quite a big surprise for the industry as well as his attention for Oculus VR company where he joined as Chief Technology Officer (CTO). But, according to recent interview with USA Today, it appears that this move was not a big surprise for Carmack and those close to iD Software and Oculus VR.
According to the interview in question, Carmack pushed for some kind of deal between Oculus VR and Zenimax which could bring currently developed games to Oculus Rift VR headset, but apparently, Zenimax was not interested. Thus, John Carmack decided to leave iD Software in order to devote its full time to Oculus VR.
"It would have been a huge win," said Carmack, "It seemed like a sensible plan for me." The details which pushed Zenimax not to go with such a deal with Oculus VR are still unknown but considering the hype Oculus Rift has created, it might be a bad move on their side.
John Carmack added that, "they couldn't come together on that which made me really sad. It was just unfortunate. When it became clear that I wasn't going to have the opportunity to do any work on VR while at id software, I decided to not renew my contract."
In any case, Oculus VR already had a bright future and it definitely got a bit more brighter when Carmack joined the company.
