AMD has issued its fourth quarter 2013 as well as annual financial results reports a decent increase in revenue of US $1.59 billion when compared to the same quarter last year but annual revenue is actually down to US $5.3 billion when compared to last year US $5.42 billion.
The operating income for the Q4 2013 is at US $135 million while income is US $89 million, or US $0.12 per share. The rise in revenue from US $1.46 billion last quarter and US $1.16 billion in the same quarter last year can be attributed to the launch of both Sony's and Microsoft's next-generation consoles powered by AMD's custom APUs.
AMD also recently launched its next-generation AMD A-Series Kaveri APUs, but fruit of that labor should be seen in the financial report for Q1 2014. Although AMD's current financial results do not sound so bleak and its outlook statements are forward-looking, it has quite a hard quarter ahead and expects a drop in revenue of 16 percent, +/- 3 percent, sequentially.
As noted earlier, the main gains in revenue came from AMD's Graphics and Visual Solutions segment, which includes semi-custom APUs, which AMD is selling to Sony and Microsoft for Playstation 4 and Xbox One, but it also includes AMD's GPUs which average selling prices were increased when compared to the last year, mostly thanks to the recently launched R7 and R9 graphics cards. The Radeon R9 line is most likely the big winner mostly due to the recent coin mining frenzy.
The CPU and server segment did not do that well and its sales were down 13 percent year over year.
President and CEO Rory Read noted that AMD is suffering from slower notebook sales and is a victim of tablet market rise. Although he claims that some parts of the PC market are currently stabilizing, AMD is still has a rough road ahead.
