Valve changes its Steam Controller

Farewell to the central touchscreen

Valve has kicked off its Steam Dev Days in Seattle and during the first day it has revealed some new details regarding the fate of its Steam Controller gamepad. Following the feedback from beta testers, Valve has apparently decided not to use the center placed touchscreen but rather replace it with two clusters of four buttons.

During its Steam Dev Days, Valve usually shows new projects and discuss the state of its projects that are currently in development. The introduction was focused on current excellent situation of the platform which has grown significantly.

Regarding future projects, Valve decided to talk a bit about the Steam controller. Results from the first batch that was sent to 300 beta testers which were lucky enough to score the new Steam Machine apparently show that touchpad is not that interesting and actually diverts attention of the player from the screen.

Judging from the tweet from a member of the company, we can see that Valve has abandoned the touchscreen and replaced it with eight buttons, or precisely a two clusters of four buttons arranged in a familiar way, used on most controllers right now. If the picture is a new project then it should be confirmed pretty soon as it should be ready for the launch of Steam Machines. The company also announced that the gamepad will be also available for a direct purchase from Valve by the end of this year.
