Linksys, which is now under Belkin, which bought it from Cisco, have resurrected what is most likely the most recognizable router in the world, the black/blue WRT54G. With a slightly modern look, better insides, dual-band connectivity, latest wireless technology, the new WRT1900AC is definitely on a good way to become the next big thing.
Released back in December 2012, the blue and black WRT54G was given a new, more modern look but definitely inspired by WRT54G stackable form factor. The WRT1900AC is equipped with a more powerful 1.2GHz dual-core processor, four removable antennas, eSATA and USB 2.0/3.0 connectivity ports, four Gigabit LAN ports, and dual-band 802.11ac WiFi with up to 1.3Gbps on the 5GHz band and up to 600Mbps on the 2.4GHz one.
As a tribute to the old WRT54G, Linksys will provide early hardware with SDKs and APIs to developer of the 3rd-party OpenWRT firmware as well as a plan to have custom open source firmware available for download when the new router launches sometime during spring this year.
The announced price of US $299.99 might sound a bit steep but Linksys VP Mike Chen promises that the WRT1900AC "will be the most powerful router in its class on the market. We have spared no technology expense to make this router a prosumers’ dream."
