Samsung has decided to announce a new security solution for its praised 840 EVO solid state drive, the 840 EVO Self-Encrypting Drive (SED), which will be compatible with professional security software.
The new data security enhancements are currently shipping and can be also enabled via firmware update for the 840 EVO SSD SATA drive which was launched back in August. The Samsung SSD SED solution is enabled via the newly released Samsung Magician 4.3 software, providing the enhanced security features required in enterprise user environments, such as government offices, finance institutions and other businesses.
With new firmware, the Samsung 840 EVO line now offers three security types including Class 0, TCG Opal, and Encrypted Drive (eDrive). While it already had Class 0 encryption enabled with a BIOS password, the new update allows 3rd party ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) to further enhance security. The new update also adds support for Microsoft eDrive security and also features crypto erase through Physical Security ID (PSID) and encryption keys for large data which should protect data from being accessed without authentication.
