Probably one of the most interestingly looking mass produced pre-assembled computers in near history, Apple's new cylindrical Mac Pro is now finally available for order and starts at US $2,999.
With cylindrical case which is less than 10-inches tall and looking like a quality trash bin rather than a computer, the new Apple Mac Pro features, what Apple calls, "an innovative unified thermal core", or a single center placed heatsink with blower fan which is in contact with all components. Despite the small case, Apple managed to squeeze in some impressive components including up to 12-core Intel Xeon CPU and dual AMD FirePro D500 graphics card.
As noted, the entry level system starts at US $2,999 and includes Intel's 3.7GHz quad-core Xeon E5 CPU, 12GB of 1866MHz DDR3 ECC memory, two AMD FirePro D300 graphics cards with 2GB of VRAM per GPU and a 256GB PCI-Express flash storage. The next in line of models is the 6-core/Dual GPU model selling for US $3,999 which includes 3.5GHz 6-core Intel Xeon E5 CPU, 16GB of 1866MHz DDR3 ECC memory, two AMD FirePro D500 with 3GB of GDDT5 VRAM per GPU and same 256GB PCIe flash storage.
As always, you can also configure your own solution with up to 12-core Intel Xeon E5 CPU, FirePro GPUs with up to 6GB of VRAM per GPU, up to 64GB of RAM and up to 1TB of PCIe flash storage. There is no lack of connectivity either as Apple managed to include almost everything, if not everything, that you might actually need, including, audio/headphone jacks, four USB 3.0 ports, six Thunderbolt 2 ports, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and HDMI 1.4 output.
According to Apple, you can actually connect up to three 4K display via those six Thunderbolt ports and that is definitely the system that we would like to see. It will run on Apple's latest OSX Mavericks OS, and certainly has a price worthy of Apple's name.
