Intel has announced yet another modem that will be a part of its steadily growing 4G LTE family, the XMM 7160. According to Intel, the XMM 7160 is one of the smallest LTE solutions on the market and it already found its placed in Samsung's Intel-based Galaxy Tab 3 tablet.
Intel's XMM features support for HSPA and GSM as well as 15 LTE bands. It provides seamless connectivity across 2G, 3G and 4G LTE networks and works across Asia, Europe and North America.
Unfortunately for Intel and a lot of other players in the SoC market, the XMM 1760 is still a module and Intel will not have an integrated LTE solution before next year. Until then, Qualcomm will rule the integrated LTE market and it is no wonder that it is currently the first choice of any smartphone/tablet manufacturer on the market. In addition to GSM, HSPA and LTE, the XMM 7160 also supports voice-over LTE (VoLTE) and currently available as a PCIe M.2 LTE module or Intel SMARTi m4G solution.
The XMM 7160 PCIe M.2 LTE module aims to be used across a variety of device types with peak downlink speed of 100Mbps over LTE and also comes with support for Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) based on the Intel CG1960 GNSS solution.
The Intel SMARTi m4G, a highly integrated radio transceiver module, developed in cooperation with Murata, which integrates the Intel SMARTi 4G transceiver with most front-end components in one LTCC (low temperature co-fired ceramic) package.
According to Intel, the company plans to deliver next-generation LTE solution, including the Intel XMM 7260 in 2014 that will include LTE Advanced features, faster speeds and support for TD-LTE and TD-SCDMA.
