Designer Dave Hakkens decided to get to the source of the electronic waste problem by designing and presenting an idea of a modular smartphone that actually looks quite interesting and unique, the Phonebloks.

While it would not only fix a problem of having to replace the entire smartphone if a part of it breaks but rather just replace the broken module, the Phonebloks also opens an opportunity to create a unique way of customization that would only be limited to the size of the base. For example, someone would want more storage, larger battery, better camera etc. which could be defined by the size and the quality of the "block".

The project and the video showing it got quite a decent amount of support and if you like it, you might want to add your own voice to the list. While it would probably never get to a real device, mostly as most manufacturers really like the idea of selling a new device rather than just a module, it is still a really nice idea.

Of course, there is still that small percentage of possibility that someone really go for it and make it into a real device, even if it is limited, would certainly find its consumer base.
