Samsung launches Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear

5.7-inch phablet and perfect companion for it

As expected and announced earlier, Samsung has unveiled both the new Galaxy Note 3 5.7-inch phablet as well as the new Galaxy Gear smartwatch during its Samsung Unpacked 2013 Episode 2 pre-IFA 2013 press conference in Berlin.

The press conference kicked off with Galaxy Note 3, a 5.7-inch 1920x1080 phablet that has taken a lot of design solutions and even some specs from recently launched Galaxy S4 smartphone as well as feature a new S-Pen. The star of the Galaxy Note 3 is definitely its 5.7-inch Super AMOLED 1920x1080p screen that takes up most of the 151.2x79.2x8.3mm dimensions. It weighs 168 grams and is powered by either Samsung's own 1.9GHz Exynos 5 Octa or 2.3GHz clock Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800, depending on the region. Both SoCs are paired up with 3GB of RAM memory as well as either 32 or 64GB of storage space expandable by up to 64GB microSD card.

The main rear 13-megapixel camera is transplanted from Galaxy S4 as there was no reason for better camera, at least not until Sony announced its Xperia Z1 flagship with 20.7-megapixel camera. The rest of the specs include LTE support, 802.11ac WiFi, GPS/GLONASS, Bluetooth 4.0, MHL 2.0 port, IR LED for remote control and NFC as well as 3200mAh battery that, according to Samsung, provides 40 percent more video playback than the previous Note.

The new S-Pen brings "additional functionality" with Smart Freedom feature that launches a circle with five actions including Action Memo, Scrapbook, Screen Write, S Finder, Pen Window when you press a button on it as well as some other neat features. The new flagship phablet from Samsung runs on Android 4.3 with Samsung own Nature UX overlay and will be offered together with specially designed "designer full-coverage wraps" that allows you to use it with S-Pen thanks to the front window.

In addition to the new Galaxy Note 3 flagship phablet, Samsung also unveiled the new Galaxy Gear smartwatch that it decided to call "the perfect companion to your Note 3". The good side of the story is that the Galaxy Gear looks a bit different than what we have seen on earlier leaks as it is not that bulky and features sleek chrome accents that give out an impression of a quality device. The 1.63-inch screen on the Galaxy Gear features Super AMOLED 320x320 resolution panel

In case you are wondering, the precise dimensions are set at 36.8x56.6x11.1mm and it weighs 73.8g. Samsung's Galaxy Gear will work best with Galaxy Note 3 and, as expected, will only be compatible with "some" Galaxy smartphones, which would we rather expect from the likes of Apple. It will work with Galaxy S III and S4, Note II and 3 as well as the new Note 10.1 also announced at IFA 2013. All older noted devices will need a software update. The main function of the Galaxy Gear is to show you incoming messages, such as calls, texts, emails and various alerts as well as deliver a preview of those messages.

The rest of the features include Smart Realay, which automatically transfers anything that is on the screen of the Galaxy Gear directly to Galaxy smartphone when you unlock it. It also comes with S Voice commands, as well as a neat feature that locks your smartphone when you move the Galaxy Gear more than 1.5 meters away from the smartphone and even helps you find it via Find My Device feature. It also comes with S Health app although it lacks the heart-rate monitr.

Unfortunatly, Samsung did not shed many specs and it si currently known that it does not run on Android OS, is powered by an unknown 800MHz SoC with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. It features 315mAh battery that should keep it running for more than a day and connects to your smartphone, at least if you have one of those select Galaxy smartphones, via Bluetooth 4.0 LE. It also comes with a 1.9-megapixel camera capable of shooting 720p video.

The new Galaxy Note 3 phablet will launch on September 25th in more than 140 countries worldwide. Unfortunately, Samsung did not shed any light on the actual price of the new Galaxy Note 3. The Galaxy Gear, on the other hand, will be available later this month in most of the world while the US and Japan will have to wait until October. The price is set at US $299.
