Microsoft already shed some light regarding the APU that will be a key part of the upcoming Xbox One console and that actually has a die size of 363mm2 which is pretty large considering the fact that it is based on eight Jaguar cores and recent rumors suggest that it might even feature a discrete GPU that would be stacked inside the APU.

Since Sony's Playstation 4 is pretty much based on same architecture and same custom made APU but also feature much faster GDDR5 memory it should be a winner in terms of performance but Microsoft already made it clear that it did not want to talk about many important parts of the APU since it did not want to give a clear picture to its competitors. If the rumor about the discrete GPU is true, Microsoft could have a much faster console.

There has been a lot of mentioning of so called dGPU and APU isnide the Xbox One could feature W2W (wafer 2 wafer) multi-module design that allows chip stacking. The first layer would be the already detailed 28nm chip that features eight Jaguar cores and modified Radeon HD 6670 with DirectX 11.1 support. If the rumor is true, the chip stacked beneath it could be a discrete GPU and below it a layer with dedicated 32MB of ESRAM.

According to rumors, the discrete GPU could be a 22nm SOI design Volcanic Islands architecture GPU with anywhere between 2304 and 2560 stream processors. Since Volcanic Islands architecture is scheduled to be unveiled in September, it is clear why AMD did not want to talk about it and we doubt that AMD itself would actually confirm the Xbox One rumor as we will have to wait for Microsoft.

In any case and if the rumor is actually true, Microsoft's Xbox One just got a bit more interesting.
