According to various reports that surfaced recently and today, it appears that AMD might actually discontinue its Radeon HD 7990 Malta flagship in Q3 2013, despite the fact that it was launched in April 2013. These rumors actually came in line with previous one, which stated that we might seen the new AMD Radeon HD 9000 series as early as October.
AMD Radeon HD 7990 had its ups and downs as it was the actual replacement of the "unofficial" Radeon HD 7990 New Zealand graphics card. Currently, the availability of the HD 7990 has been quite scarce and AMD plans to clear the inventories by end of Q3 (end of September). AMD's Radeon HD 7990 also has a quite steep price tag putting it in line with Nvidia's top offer.
This move from AMD actually adds some leverage to the previous rumor of October arrival of Radeon HD 9000 Volcanic Islands series. In any case, only time will tell but Radeon HD 7990 is apparently destined to disappear from the market.
