Globalfoundries and Fuzhou Rockchip Electronics have announced that Rockchip's next-generation mobile processors are ramping to production and will be done with Globalfoundries 28nm High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) process technology.
Based on ARM Cortex-A9 design, the RK3188 and RK3168 chips are optimized for future high-performance, low-cost tablets that require long-lasting battery life. According to the announcement, the combination of Rockchip's design and GF's 28nm HKMG process will provide a mainstream SoC capable of operating at up to 1.8GHz while maintaining expected power efficiency. The chips have already began sampling to OEMs in early 2013.
Globalfoundries is certainly ramping up its list of customers and Rockchip is not a small player as many budget tablets are based on Rockchip SoCs.
