AMD Radeon HD 8000 might be coming in Q3 2013

Rumors spread about the specifications

According to the latest rumors from Chiphell.com, we might see AMD's Radeon HD 8000 desktop GPU series as soon as Q3 2013. The site even released some of the specifications that certainly raised an eyebrow or two and should be enough to compete with Nvidia's latest lineup.

Earlier details and rumors suggested that AMD wants to keep focused on the Radeon HD 7000 at least until Q3 2013 but recent Nvidia push with GTX 700 series might have changed a few minds at AMD. According to a report, AMD is working on four chips, all based on 28nm manufacturing process and some impressive specs.

The AMD Radeon HD 8970, codename Curacao XT, is a chip that should tackle Nvidia's GTX 780 and feature 2304 stream processors, 144 TMUs and 48 ROPs. Current info suggest it should work at 1100MHz for the GPU and feature 6GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 7GHz and paired up with a 384-bit memory interface. It should have a peak floating point compute performance of 5.07 TFlops and have eight Asynchronous Compute Engines which is twice as much when compared to previous generation. The source suggest that the entire line should be based on GCN 2.0 architecture.

Next in line are the Hainan-based Radeon HD 8950 and the HD 8870. The Hainan XT Radeon HD 8950 will feature 1792 stream processors, 112 TMUs, 32 ROPs and work at 1200MHz for the GPU. It should feature 4GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at same 7GHz and paired up with a 256-bit memory interface. The peak floating point performance for the HD 8950 is set at 4.3TFlops. The Hainan Pro based Radeon HD 8870 is rumored to have 1536 stream processors, 96 TMUS and same 32 ROPs. It should work at 1100MHz GPU clock and pack 2GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 6GHz and paired up with the same 256-bit memory interface. Lower clock and lower number of SPs also mean lower 3.38 TFlop peak floating point performance.

The last but not the least is the Hainan LE based Radeon HD 8850 with 1280 stream processors, 80 TMUs and 32 ROPs. This one should work at 1000MHz for the GPU and feature 2GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 6GHz and paried up with the same 256-bit memory interface.

The entire line should be a part of Volcanic Island series rumored earlier but unlike earlier rumors claiming that AMD will wait for the 20nm manufacturing process, it loos like AMD decided to use the current 28nm one.

The rumored price ranges from US $229 for the Radeon HD 8850, US $299 and US $399 for the Radeon HD 8870 and Radeon HD 8950, up to US $599 for the high-end Radeon HD 8970 Curcao XT part. Although the prices might sound a bit steep, they are pretty much in line with Nvidia's lineup and we might be on the verge of another set of price wars as soon as AMD launched these graphics cards.
