Since it has been heavily delayed and Qualcomm seized an opportunity to take a big piece of the flagship smartphone market, it appears that Nvidia will switch Tegra 4 focus to tablets now.
The Tegra 4 chip should start to ship out in Q2 2013 and Nvidia expect some of the first products before the end of June 2013. One of the first products should end up to be the Project Shield, an Nvidia-made handheld Android-based console. Of course, Tegra 4 will still get some smartphone design wins but it will not come even close to what Qualcomm managed to do with its Snapdragon 600 and the upcoming Snapdragon 800 chipsets as it has even managed to score the next-gen Nexus 7 deal, a really important device.
Nvidia hopes that it will manage to get Tegra 4 up and running for the "back to school" market chance and win some tablet design wins that could help it get out of these problems it is facing right now.
Nvidia's Tegra 4i might have a better chance in the smartphone market and Nvidia has apparently managed to get some design wins while first smartphones based on it should appear early next year, around CES 2014 in January.
