HGST (previously known as the Hitachi Global Storage Technologies) have announced a new line of enterprise-class solid state drives with MLC NAND flash memory and 12Gb/s SAS interface. The new Ultrastar SAS SSD lineup will include Ultrastar SSD800MH, Ultrastar SSD800MM and Ultrastar SSD1000MR SSDs.
The new HGST SSDs are, according to the company, first drives to double today's SAS interface speed and designed for most demanding applications in the online banking, cloud computing, online gaming or big data analytics scenarios. Three announced drives will represent high endurance, mainstream endurance and read intensive performance segments.
The high endurance Ultrastar SSD800MH has a sequential throughput of up to 1,200MB/s read and up to 750MB/s write while sustained read and write performance is at 145,000 and 100,000 IOPS. It also has the highest endurance rating of 25 full drive writes per day (DW/D) in order to cope up with high-frequency trading and online transaction processing.
The mainstream endurance Ultrastar SSD800MM has sequential read and write performance of up to 1200MB/s and 700MB/s while sustained read and write performance is at up to 145k and 70k IOPS. The endurance rating on the SSD800MM is set at 10 full DW/D and it is aimed at online gaming, big data and cloud computing markets.
The read intensive Ultrastar SSD1000MR SSD is rated at "only" two DW/D for five years and made for audio/video streaming, cloud computing and other Internet applications. It will be available in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacity options and has a read and write performance of up to 1200MB/s and 700MB/s. The maximum random 4K read and write are set at 145k and 20k IOPS.
The Ultrastar SSD800MM and SSD800MH will both be available in 800, 400 and 200GB capacities. According to HGST, all three are currently in the qualification process with selected OEMs while channel distribution is expected in June.
