We are into the third quarter of 2018 and we have another Backblaze hard drive failure report to discuss. The report includes 100'254 spinning hard drives in Backblaze's data centers. The number includes 1'989 boot drives and 98'265 data drives. This review unveils several results and shows the score of 14TB HDD too.
The list includes several models and manufacturers, however the vast majority of the drives the company has in service are from Seagate. HGST is on the second place as disk provider, followed well behind by Western Digital and Toshiba. The 14TB HDD that Backblaze has added to the test comes from Toshiba. This drive uses conventional magnetic recording (CMR) technology instead of the slower shingled method (SMR). In other words, it should be fast like a traditional HDD and hit up to 7200 rpm. The drive count is still rather low since the company has only 20 units.
According to Backblaze, the most interesting results are the lifetime failure rates. The chart above displays reliability data on a large number of HDDs and puts Western Digital in a bad position. For example the WD Red 3TB and 6TB models have a failure rate greater than 4%. The company has tested more than 600 of these drives. If you curious to know all results, you can check latest report's data yourself over to the company's site.
