Intel is set to release its first octa-core mainstream processor in the autumn. This upcoming Coffee Lake refresh CPU will pack two more physical cores than the top-end 8th gen Core processors availabe at the moment. Furthermore the company will refresh Basin Falls HEDT platform as well.


According to a report from PC-Watch, Intel will add its first mainstream octa-core processor(s) in reaction of AMD's mainstream Ryzen processors. The upcoming Intel CPU will use LGA1151 socket and 300-series chipset. The chip might be unveiled during next September. According to Techpowerup, this upcoming octa-core might use the Intel's classic "Ring Bus" design.

Furthermore Intel might add a refresh for the current Basin Falls HEDT platform (LGA2066). According to the latest rumors, Intel should add a new die with four more tiles than the Skylake HCC silicon. Building upon this die, Intel will be able to design 20 core and 22 core processors. During the Computex, Intel has shown a demo PC with inside a 28 core CPU. This CPU isn't compatible with LGA2066 and it's still unclear when will be available.
