According to a report from the Chinese website MyDrivers, NVIDIA is looking to speed up on its line-up with a much earlier than expected Q3 Volta Launch. According to NVIDIA's own road-maps Volta should have launched much later by the beginning of 2018.
Following the report, NVIDIA Volta - and the GeForce 20-series - will see an early launch due to market demands. At this time it is unknown if these rumours are true but they’re certainly painting a pretty interesting picture. With the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and the TITAN Xp the company has recently introduced two high performance graphics cards but it might be that these will be replaced rather sooner than later.
Volta should be based on TSMC's 12nm manufacturing process. This and the fact that the there is an improved chip design should make Volta more energy efficient than Pascal. According to those first rumors, NVIDIA should might use stacked DRAM memory, which is better known under the name HBM2. So far it’s completely unknown whether Volta will only launch for the HPC and server market first and the consumer parts become available at a later stage.
So far is hard to tell what exactly NVIDIA is going to do with Volta and it’s also too early to say if these rumours are true. However one conclusion would be that maybe AMD’s Vega architecture is performing better than what we’ve been expecting and therefore NVIDIA wants to make sure that they have a proper counterpart at their disposal.
