During the Q3 2016 earnings call, AMD's CEO Dr. Lisa Su confirmed that AMD's next-generation Zen CPU architecture will launch in Q1 2017.
As you already know, AMD's Zen CPU architecture will launch with desktop Summit Ridge FX-series CPU lineup and will fit in AMD's new AM4 socket. The new AM4 socket will be a unified socket which means it will also support the upcoming Bristol Ridge APUs, also based on Zen CPU architecture as well as bring support for DDR4 memory.
During the same earnings call, AMD's CEO Dr. Lisa Su also mentioned that the company expects higher sales thanks to the new CPU architecture as well as that these upcoming CPUs will be able to compete with Intel's Core i5 and Core i7 chips.
The most interesting product in the lineup will be the 8-core FX-series CPU with 16 threads and a total of 4MB of L2 (512KB per core) and 8MB of L3 cache. Earlier rumors suggested that the engineering samples were clocked above 3.3GHz, which should give AMD enough performance to compete with Intel chips.
AMD is putting a lot of faith in its Zen CPU architecture and hopefully it will play out as expected as it has been a while since we saw some real competition in the CPU market segment.
