Virtual reality (VR) is heating up and while some of the first consumer-ready VR headsets are about to be shipped to early-adopters, software for VR is also an interesting subject and it appears that using your Windows desktop in VR will become a reality soon with the upcoming Virtual Desktop app.

Coming to Steam on March 28th and supporting both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR headsets, the Virtual Desktop software, developed by Guy Godin, will allow users to use Windows Desktop with VR headsets.

According to the released trailer, the Virtual Desktop app will not only allow users to do plain office work in virtual reality, enjoy 360° images and video, enjoy music with virtual reality effects and much more.

What makes it quite interesting is the ability to emulate multiple monitors and "stitch them together" without the annoying bezel.

According to details, there will be a minor overhead or performance impact as it feeds directly through DirectX and even allow users to pick if the virtual screen/screens will be curved or flat.

Hopefully we will have to check it out when it launches on March 28th but currently it looks quite interesting and probably one of the best pieces of software for VR we have seen so far.
