While it is certain that Nvidia will be unveiling its Pascal GPU based graphics card at GTC 2016, the latest report suggest that the GP104-based GTX 1080 with 8GB of memory might launch in May.
While we will most likely see the Pascal GPU for Tesla and Quadro professional graphics cards at GTC 2016 conference, which kicks off on April 4th, it appears that consumer graphics cards won't be far behind as,
according to Benchlife, the GP104-based GTX 1080 could launch in May.
While the report does mention the GTX 1080 name, it is still left to be see if Nvidia will decide to keep the current naming scheme or go for something else. The Geforce GTX 1080 is said to be based on GP104 GPU and bring twice the performance per Watt compared to Maxwell. The GPU is build on TSMC's 16nm FinFET manufacturing process and has 17 billion transistors.
Benchlife suggests that GTX 1080 could be shipping on May 27th, which suggest that Nvidia will most likely host a pre-Computex event, giving AIB partners enough time to showcase their own versions at Computex 2016 show in June.
While the Quadro and Tesla professional as well as Titan graphics cards, based on GP100 GPU, will most likely end up with High Bandwidth Memory, either 16GB of 32GB, the GP104-based consumer graphics card will most likely be still based on GDDR5 memory.
In any case, we will have more details as soon as GTC 2016 kicks off and it appears that the next couple of months will be quite interesting when it comes to next-generation GPUs.
