Vulkan API benchmarked in Talos Principle

Slower than DirectX 11

Vulkan has officially been announced yesterday and meanwhile there are already the first benchmarks around. The guys over at Computerbase ran a few tests on Talos Principle, which appears to be the first game allowing you to select Vulkan as the graphics API.

So far the Vulkan implementation is in very early stages. The developers are saying that crashes, lower performance or graphics bugs could occur. As Computerbase experienced it the game was running stable with the new API and there were also no graphics bugs, but the performance was indeed lower than with DirectX 11. So far it really looks like a lot of additional tweaking is going to be necessary to make games perform better with Vulkan than with DirectX 11.

A look at the performance charts on Computerbase reveals that at 1440p with a GTX 980 Ti and a Core i7-4770K, DirectX 11 is performing 42% better than Vulkan. Using a FuryX in the same system makes Vulkan perform a bit better, but the gap to DirectX 11 is still 21%.

In the case of Talos Principle it loosk like Vulkan works a little better with the AMD FuryX than with the GTX 980 Ti. It's going to be interesting to see more games supporting Vulkan and maybe the new API is really capable of competing with DirectX after some more getting used to and tweaking for develpers side.
