Intel working on 5.1GHz clocked Xeon Broadwell-EP chip

The Xeon E5-2602 V4 with 165W TDP

According to the new rumor, it appears that Intel is working on a new Xeon E5-2602 V4 Broadwell-EP chip clocked at 5.1GHz, which will be the highest default clock frequency seen so far.

According to the rumor coming from several Chinese sources, spotted by Wccftech.com, Intel is preparing to launch the newest SKU in its E5-2600 V4 Xeon family, a quad-core CPU clocked at 5.1GHz and specifically designed for certain workloads, the Xeon E5-2602 V4.

The new Xeon E5-2602 V4 will have support for Hyper Threading, have a default clock frequency of 5.1GHz, 10MB of L3 cache and a 165W TDP.

While such clock would not be a surprise for consumer grade CPU, it definitely is a big surprise that we are looking at a Xeon CPU, especially considering its 165W TDP. Although based on a 14nm manufacturing process, 165W TDP is still high for a Xeon quad-core CPU.

AMD managed to hit 5.0GHz with its high-end FX-9590 CPU and it held the throne for quite some time but it appears that Intel is back in the GHz race. Unfortunately, the Xeon E5-2602 V4 will be available only through certain OEMs and for certain partners and some of those Chinese sources are even suggesting that Intel designed it for the US National Security Agency.

Intel is on track to launch its Broadwell-EP based Xeon E5-2600 V4 lineup during this quarter, and high-end 24-core Xeon E7 is expected in Q2 2016.
