Mushkin promises US $500 4TB SSD at CES 2016

Reactor series SSD

There were plenty of SSDs to see at the Consumer Electronics Show 2016 held last week in Las Vegas but a new addition to Mushkin's Reactor SSD lineup certainly caught attention as it promises 4TB of capacity for US $500.

There weren't a lot of drives based on Silicon Motion's SM2246EN controller, but Mushkin's Reactor 1TB SSD certainly was a great choice if you were looking for capacity rather than performance.

At the CES 2016 show in Las Vegas, Mushkin showed a new addition to the Reactor SSD lineup which will feature an updated SM2246EN controller which supports both 3D NAND as well as expands the capacity to 2TB SSD. According to details provided by Techreport.com, the new Reactor SSD is based on 3D MLC NAND flash and should offer great mix of performance and affordability.

While 2TB SSD is certainly an impressive one, Mushkin has showed an even more impressive thing, pairing up two 2TB SSDs with JBOD on a single PCB, making a 4TB Reactor series SSD. This will have a certain effect on random read and write performance, peaking at about 10K IOPS, but should provide more capacity than any other similar SSD on the market, providing good performance for applications needing more storage and sequential performance rather than random performance.

According to the report, Mushkin is targeting a US $500 price for the 4TB Reactor SSD and it should be available sometime after the release of the 2TB version, which is scheduled for Q2 2016.
