Samsung portable SSD hits 2TB with Portable SSD T3

With the new USB 3.1 Type-C interface

Samsung has decided that Consumer Electronics Show 2016 currently held in Las Vegas is the right time to announce its new Portable SSD T3 which will be available in capacities of up to 3TB and offer new USB 3.1 Type-C interface.

Around a year ago, Samsung has introduced the Portable SSD T1, a small pocket-sized SSD designed to be used as a fast external storage, and today, Samsung has updated the lineup with the new Portable SSD T3 version. The new Samsung Portable SSD T3 will be available in standard 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities as well as a new 2TB capacity, most likely due to a move to the new 48-layer 3D V-NAND technology.

Grabbing CES Innovation Awards Honoree 2016 award, the new Samsung Portable SSD T3 has the same design and similar dimensions set at 74 x 58 x 10.5 mm with 54g of weight, but uses a metal case which should add to a complete quality feel and a bit more strength.

In addition to the new chassis design, Samsung also used the new USB 3.1 Type-C interface so the new Portable SSD T3 should offer up to 450MB/s of sequential performance. While it might have got the new outside interface, it is still based on the same mSATA SSD as the Portable SSD T1 version and this could also mean that we will see a new 850 EVO mSATA 2TB SSD soon.

The rest of the specifications include AES 256-bit hardware encryption and optional password settings for security and it is backed by a 3-year warranty.

Unfortunately, Samsung did not unveil the price, but did say that the new Portable SSD T3 should ship in February in the USB, China, Korea and select European countries.
