While gamers spend quite a bit of money on perfect 5.1-channel or 7.1-channel headsets, audiophile solutions are quite a different story and Sennheiser's new Orpheus headphones are a whole different world.
Created as the successor of the original Orpheus headphones launched back in 1991, which combine classic wood with visible valve amps, the Orpheus headphones are an art masterpiece as much as they are premium headphones reserved only for those with deep pockets. Showing that these still have what it takes are listing on auction sites that ask a small fortune for well kept original Orpheus headphones.
After 10 years of working on the successor, according to Sennheiser, the new Orpheus headphones not only have a higher price tag but plenty of new features as well, including motorized amps that rise out of the marble base and glass lid that keep them safe.
Made from quartz glass, the valves reduce unwanted noise and aren't connected to the main structure so any vibrations can't be transferred to the amp. Cladded in high-quality German leather and micro-fibre fabric, with transistor power amp built-in the earphones, the new Orpheus comes with 2.4-micrometer thick platinum coated diaphragms and offer frequency range of 8Hz to 100kHz with audio quality reaching 32bit/384kHz.
It is obvious that Sennheiser Orpheus is limited to enthusiasts and audiophiles, but they do look like a premium product and are quite appealing, despite the ridiculous €50,000/US $50,000 price tag.
