In case you are looking for a router that would be a flagship part of your network, then you might consider the new RT-AC5300 which ASUS unveiled at IFA 2015 show in Berlin.
Easily mistaken for a piece of alien tech, the ASUS RT-AC5300 is a direct successor of the earlier released ASUS RT-AC3200. Just like the RT-AC3200, the new ASUS RT-AC5300 is also a tri-band router, featuring one 2.4GHz and two 5GHz bands.
It is based on latest Broadcom WiFi chip (BCM4709+BCM4366 (2.4GHz) + 2 x BCM4366 (5GHz)) and offers quite more bandwidth compared to its predecessor. To be precise, the RT-AC5300 tops at 1,000Mbps on 2.4GHz band and 2,167Mbps for each of the 5.0GHz bands. When you add up all the numbers, you end up with a stunning 5,300Mbps.
The rest of the specs include eight external dual-band detachable antennas, has 128MB of flash and 256MB of DDR3 RAM, comes with single Gigabit WAN, four Gigabit LAN and USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports. It also features 3G cellular sharing, HDD sharing via SAMBA and DLNA, FTP and print server as well as ASUS' own AiProtection network security services.
ASUS said that the RT-AC5300 should be available by the end of the year so it might be a perfect gift to find under the Christmas tree (although it might look weird there) and while ASUS did not announce the price, rumors put it at around US $400.
