Seagate Technology has announced its newest 2.5-inch hard drive which will feature 2TB capacity and be based on a new 1TB SMR platters.

While 2TB 2.5-inch HDDs have been available for quite some time, they have been mostly limited to 9.5mm thickness. Thanks to the new Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology, as well as new new head, preamp, channel and other components, Seagate managed to reduce thickness to 7mm, while also reducing the weight.

Unfortunately, Seagate did not reveal a lot of information regarding these new 2TB 2.5-inch HDDs so we still do not know the rotational speed, amount of cache or any other information. According to Seagate, these industry first HDDs that use 1TB SMR platters "will allow OEMs the flexibility to design and build virtually any kind of mobile device."

With 1TB SMR platters hitting 2.5-inch HDDs, it is just a matter of time before we see similar technology in 3.5-inch HDDs, allowing Seagate to pack five 2TB platters for a 10TB HDD.

There is no word on the price or the precise availability date for Seagate's new 2TB 2.5-inch 7mm HDD.
