According to the newest rumor, Nvidia is apparently working on a new GTX 990M GPU that could be faster than the desktop GTX 980.
Nvidia's fastest mobile chip is currently the GTX 980M, which although usually enough for high-end notebooks does not come close to the desktop GTX 980 but according tot he latest rumor, this could soon change. The rumor suggest that the upcoming GTX 990M could end up as fast as the GTX 980M in SLI and with the GTX 980M based on Maxwell GM204 GPU with 1536 CUDA cores, the new GTX 990M will be quite a beast.
The rumor also suggest that the GTX 990M is also around 10 percent faster than the desktop GTX 980 as well.
Codenamed, "N16E-GXX" the new GTX 990M was earlier hinted by Wu Haijun, CEO of Chinese laptop manufacturer, who said that Nvidia is preparing a new mobile chip which should come sometime between September and December, or Q4 2015.
While the performance could be impressive, such chip could end up with quite a high TDP, or somewhere above 100W and reaching 180W, which will be quite hard for notebook manufacturers to squeeze in a normal notebook and cool down the chip. You can expect the GTX 990M to be probably available in 17-inch notebooks and we certainly hope that the rumor is true.
In any case, we will keep our eye on it and hopefully we will hear more rumors as we draw closer to Q4 2015.
